Taylor-Johnson Temperament Analysis Inventory

Rev. Jim Anderson is a qualified and trained user of the T-JTA®.  The Taylor-Johnson Temperament Analysis® is one of the most widely used assessments for individual, premarital, marital, and family counseling. The T-JTA® measures 18 dimensions of personality (9 bipolar traits) that are important components of individual adjustment and interpersonal relationships. The T-JTA® has been used for more than 40 years by thousands of counseling professionals in a wide array of settings in the U.S. and around the world to help people understand themselves and significant others in their lives.

The ability to be flexible and adapt in a marriage is a key factor in marital success. So these nine traits and their opposites are evaluated in light of the upcoming marriage. These traits are selected because of they are important components of personal adjustment and have influence on personal relationships. This inventory then provides the opportunity to make an evaluation of a person’s feelings about himself or herself. In the case of premarital counseling, the couple also answers questions about their partner. This is called the “Criss-Cross” inventory. It adds a dimension of interpersonal perception to the diagnostic and counseling perspective.

The T-JTA is especially designed for use in pre-marital, marital, and family counseling. In "Criss-Cross" testing, a unique feature of the T-JTA, a couple or various family members each take the test on themselves and also on their significant other. Similarities, differences, or areas of misunderstanding between the couple or family members become readily apparent. T-JTA Profiles are especially designed for use in the actual counseling sessions to promote understanding and stimulate discussion.

The purpose of this inventory in premarital counseling is to aid in evaluating the significance of temperament in a potential challenge in the new marriage. This provides an early identification of potential challenges the couple may face, and allows them to prepare for it. It can also provide each individual an opportunity to make improvements to their ability to adjust before it becomes a challenge in the relationship. Resources are also available from Rev. Jim Anderson to support the opportunities for personal growth that are identified. This inventory will enrich a couple’s understanding of each other and increase their ability to speak with empathy from their partner’s perspective.
